Exploring Switzerland on the Wanderweg

The outdoor lifestyle is one of our favorite parts of life in Switzerland. It's easy to step out your front door, look for a yellow Wanderweg sign and go exploring. Henry and I do so almost daily and Matt joins us on the weekends. We recently purchased a Zurichsee hiking map to aid our exploration.

These signs are located everywhere. Often they're accompanied by additional signs measuring the distance to upcoming sites or towns.

As I've mentioned before, our new flat is in Schwerzenbach, a town located at the top of Lake Greifensee, about 12 kilometers outside of central Zurich. A few weeks ago, our hiking map took us on our first trip together, on a hiking path beginning nearby.

The Lorenchopt-Weg is a hiking path that connects Fallanden a small town about 15 minutes by foot from Schwerzenbach, with Zurich. The three hour hike climbs through the forest, up the mountain ridge separating the Greifensee from Zurich and ends near the Zurich Zoo.

The hike followed a rambling creek full of little waterfalls and rocks covered in velvety. At this point, the trees had only just begun sprouting leaves. It was the loveliest study in green. Here are a few of my favorite photos.

Henry was convinced this large stick was coming with us. He was searching for a way to dig it out from those leaves.

The hike ended near Zurich Zoo. From there, we took a tram to central Zurich for our prize: currywurst and beer at our favorite sausage stand and a gorgeous sunset over Lake Zurich.
